NERC will ‘game’ potential grid attacks

July 10, 2013 – War games have come to the bulk electric system. The North American Electric Reliability Corp. and some 110 utilities in November will conduct a drill to see how the bulk power system can respond to a coordinated physical and cyber attack on the high-voltage transmission grid.

NERC CEO Gerry Cauley yesterday told a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission technical conference on system reliability that the November drill will test the industry’s response to a “worst case” attack on both the hard infrastructure and the software controls that govern it and manage utility and customer data.
